On Wednesday, we were delighted to welcome Apsana Begum, MP for Poplar and Limehouse, to our offices. She met with staff and Disabled people from Tower Hamlets to hear first-hand about the challenges Disabled tenants face in social housing.
The discussion focused on our Real Homes Housing Campaign, in particular the urgent need for Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs) for Disabled tenants in high-rise buildings. PEEPs are vital to ensure that everyone can evacuate safely in an emergency, but many tenants are currently left without them, putting lives at risk.
Apsana Begum listened to local Disabled people’s experiences and shared her commitment to supporting safer, more inclusive housing. We also spoke with her about other key local issues, including supporting Disabled clients, housing more broadly, and SEND provision in schools.
The Real Homes Housing Campaign, which ran earlier this year, brought together a co-production group of Disabled tenants to highlight these issues and advocate for change with local authorities and housing associations. Their voices have already helped raise awareness and put housing safety firmly on the agenda.
Although the campaign has now ended, its impact continues. We remain committed to pushing for more inclusive housing in Tower Hamlets and beyond, ensuring that Disabled tenants are not left behind when it comes to safety, accessibility, and the right to a home where everyone can thrive.
