Deaf Awareness Week 2026, taking place from 4th to 10th May 2026, is an important opportunity to challenge societal barriers and raise awareness of the diverse experiences of Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. This week focuses on promoting inclusion, understanding, and equal access, highlighting how communication barriers, negative attitudes, and a lack of accessibility often prevent people from fully participating in society. It aims to shift the narrative from viewing Deafness as a personal deficiency to recognising that society must adapt to be more inclusive of different communication needs. The week encourages greater understanding of British Sign Language (BSL), deaf culture, and the importance of removing barriers to education, employment, and social interaction for people who are Deaf or hard of hearing.
